New Program to Help Policyholders Reduce Electrical Hazards
New York Property Insurance Underwriting Association (NYPIUA)
has announced a new program to help policyholders make electrical repairs to
their homes. The program is aimed at those who are not financially able to
independently fund electrical repairs or improvements which would reduce
electrical fire hazards.
NYPIUA President, Joseph A. Calvo announced the program
saying that it is being initiated on a pilot basis. The first 100 qualifying
policyholders to apply to the program will be eligible for a grant of up to
$1,500 which will be awarded on a matching-funds basis. The funds must be used
to repair or upgrade the electrical system in the home.
To qualify for the pilot grant program, policyholders must
have been insured by NYPIUA for no less than the past five consecutive years,
must be an owner occupant of a one or two-family home, and must demonstrate
financial need.
"Through a variety of educational programs, NYPIUA is
committed to helping its policyholders identify and eliminate electrical hazards
in their homes," said Mr. Calvo. "We are hopeful that over time this
pilot program will expand, enabling more people to protect their lives and
property from fires by making necessary repairs and improvements to their
electrical systems."
A study of NYPIUA fire claims which resulted in building losses in excess of
$2,000 showed that nearly twenty-five percent of the fires were electrical. To
highlight electrical and other fire hazards to its policyholders and the general
public, NYPIUA has produced a video entitled "Safe at Home". An
interactive computer program on CD-ROM is also available.
